Brock's Beginnings - Billie Ruth Bell

"Brock, a small community located about eleven miles southwest from Weatherford, was first settled by James Monroe Maddux who came to Parker County from Arkansas in 1876," stated G.A. Holland in THE DOUBLE LOG CABIN.

During 1879, Griffin Osborn, A. Lambert, and Baron Roff were trying to raise money to build a school house at Brock. In a warranty deed dated Feb. 7, 1880, and filed July 17, 1880, James Monroe Maddux and wife deeded to the trustees of the Olive Branch School Community and their successors two acres of land for school and church purposes.

Maddux had called on every business man in Weatherford asking for gifts, and the business men gave money to help build the first school. Maddux was interested in Brock children being able to attend school in their community. His son Cicero, had taught school at Ballew Springs in 1878 and at Hiner in 1879. Maddux himself was a Georgia teacher in his earlier years.

The people in the community helped haul the lumber and then helped build the schoolhouse. The Baptist Church in Weatherford donated the old seats which solved a big problem.

A name had to be selected for the new school. Grandpa Estel, a Baptist preacher, selected Olive Branch as the Community School name. For many years the community was known as Olive Branch. After the post office was established, the name of Olive Branch was changed to Brock.

John Jones taught school the first year in the new schoolhouse. That year many students attended the summer school. Joe Roy, Gussie Williams, Gene Hodges, Wiley, Ida, and Allen King, and Emma Jean Maddux were some of these students. Mr. Jones let the students read and spell aloud while studying their lessons.
