Every year the state of Texas requires all of its public schools to administer the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills or TAKS test to their students The TAKS checks the progress of students in Reading, Writing, Math, Science, and Social Studies.
Not all grades and subjects are tested and the subjects may change slightly from year to year. Currently the following tests are given.

*Enacted by the 76th Texas Legislature in 1999, the Student Success Initiative (SSI) grade advancement requirements apply to the TAKS reading test at grade 3, the reading and mathematics tests at grade 5, and the reading and mathematics tests at grade 8. As specified by these requirements, a student may advance to the next grade level only by passing these tests or by unanimous decision of his or her grade placement committee that the student is likely to perform at grade level after additional instruction.

Overview:
This year only Math and Reading are tested at this level. The Math test will be administered on Tuesday, April 29 and the Reading test on Wednesday, April 30. 6th grade tests are not re-tested if the student fails.

Fortunately there are many resources that help the kids get ready for this test. The online version features immediate scoring of answers. The released tests are the actual tests that were used that year.
Generally, released and online tests are released every other year.
